    Judy, your program is certainly NOT boring or depressing, later in the 1960s I used to watch the King Family TV program; they would just sit or stand there, singing different songs and NOT moving, not going anywhere, no movement like statues all the time … How it stayed on the air I’ll never know … 😐😐😐

    I would bet Judy’s kids HATE that “Bonanza” TV program, they’re NEVER watch it. I didn’t watch Judy’s program in the 1960s, didn’t know it was on then; Grandpa ( he died in 1983, I never liked him) always watched that Bonanza TV program when it was new, when we visited I would leave the room and stay in the kitchen until it was over - very dull and depressing program, I would’ve watched Judy if I knew, if we stayed home then …

    Judy and Bobby Cole began their affair in NY after she saw him at Jilly's, then later sent for him to replace Mel Torme after she fired him. Cole left his wife and daughter in NY to do so. A total vendetta against Torme, of the big ego, she showed him that even a lounge performer could replace him. After the show folded in 1964, their affair continued into 1967 when she employed him to conduct for her tour. Remarkably, Cole's wife became a companion/caretaker for Judy during that time.

    • @fabrizio483
      @fabrizio483 23 дні тому

      Judy was unforgivably unfair to Tormé and turns out she knew the show was going to be cancelled and wanted to save money on new orchestrations, sets, guests, etc, which her production company paid for.

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle 23 дні тому

      @@fabrizio483 The last thing Judy cared about was saving money. If that was a concern, she would have been on time and not paid her staff overtime in the wee hours of the morning. Judy came on to Mel- I know, yuck- but she had strange taste. Mel declined and things went downhill. Also, Mel groused about Judy's not rehearsing. Judy didn't take criticism or rejection well. With Bobby Cole, she got a compliant employee in and out of bed.

    • @fabrizio483
      @fabrizio483 23 дні тому

      @@akrenwinkle Well, I just reported what's on Tormé's book. Yes, he recalled the incident when she tried to have sex with him, but he talked about how the later shows being concerts because Judy figured she could cut costs tremendously. He was fired and sued her, but after a meeting where she gave her deposition he says he felt sorry for her general appearance and decided to drop it. I like Bobby Cole on the show, but was admittedly horrified at the whole production ordeal. Whoever said you should never meet your idols was a wise man.

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle 23 дні тому

      @@fabrizio483 Replacing Torme with Cole would have saved a few thousand from the show's budget, but who do you think supported Cole when he left his wife (and child) and moved to CA? Some guests Judy had came cheap, anyway. Zina Bethune, The Kirbystone Four, the Dillards, etc. Judy was not concerned with money, which is why it meant nothing for her to keep staff waiting until all hours, and flubbed take after take. Torme wrote about the economy aspect so you'll think firing him was about nothing but greed. Judy wasn't greedy. She was just fed up with Mel's attitude. Everyone was in awe and terrified of Judy... except Mel.

    • @fabrizio483
      @fabrizio483 22 дні тому

      @@akrenwinkle I was just relating what Mel wrote in his book. I liked Bobby on the show, but given the fact that his career never went anywhere after Judy is a clear sign that he was really just a lounge pianist, not a proper musician like Mel. I do agree with you that Judy couldn't stand him because he didn't perform tricks for her like everybody else. As for the money, I think Judy had a somewhat accurate knowledge that she could always make money, but at that stage of her life, the show was her last chance and after it, she went downhill really fast, dying in the gutter if you compare she used to live in mansions. I believe the adulation she got from everyone hurt her more than the drugs, because it gave her a misshapen outlook on life as a whole.

    Ay caramba, the Anglia knight statue is way bigger than I always thought it was! You wouldn't want to drop that thing on your bare foot. I assumed that it was about the height of two stacked baked bean cans, from base to tip of flag. With nothing else featuring in the idents to get a sense of scale by, I always got the impression that it was a fairly small object.

    I was a Big Fan of Judy, especially having seen "The Wizard of Oz" on TV many times as a kid. Eventually her other Teen-years movies would be shown on TV in the 1960's, including multiples with Mickey Rooney. Judy was married multiple times, including for awhile to Music Composer / Conductor David Rose. I started College in 1965, and in my 1st semester became good friends of a student who was a Cousin to David Rose! By that time Judy and David had divorced. But my friend (family Name of GRUNES - pronounced Grew-ness) used to brag about how Judy had been his Cousin via Marriage. My friend had even seen one of Judy's last performances in NYC, and Loved Her, despite her cracking voice. Little did either of us know at that time that Judy was My Blood Cousin! My friend deceased w/o me ever getting to brag about that. As it turns out Mickey Rooney, who was married more times that Judy, was also my cousin, and was married, for awhile, to my cousin Ava Gardner! In time, Judy would have her 3 children on her Show. In this 1st show, Judy's Guest Diahann Carroll, had 4 husbands, an affair with Actor Poitier (Diahann divorced her 1st husband so she could marry Sidney; Sidney later divorced his wife for Diahann; but they did not then marry), and was engaged to News Interviewer David Frost. Diahann dumped David for the man who would become her 2nd husband. David had many women, but married only 2. 1st wife was the widow of my cousin Peter Sellers (Comic Actor). 2nd wife was my distant cousin.

      When I listen to Judy sing “ Smile”, I can hear my mom singing it too. God she loved that song. She had a damn good voice and would often sing it to me, a five year old, imitating Judy’s rendition. She would sing all of them. I didn’t appreciate it, because I was nuts about “ The Fab Four”.
